Isolation Room Pressure Monitoring: ASHRAE 170-2021 Requirements

Introduction

ASHRAE Standard 170-2021, Ventilation of Health Care Facilities, sets minimum air change rates and pressure relationships for airborne infection isolation rooms and protective environment rooms, and expects the pressure differential to be continuously monitored rather than checked on a periodic rounds basis.

Two Types of Isolation Rooms, Two Pressure Directions

ASHRAE 170-2021 distinguishes between airborne infection isolation (AII) rooms, which must be kept negative to prevent pathogens escaping to the corridor, and protective environment (PE) rooms, which must be kept positive to protect immunocompromised patients from corridor air. Getting the pressure direction wrong — or losing it silently — defeats the purpose of the room entirely.

Ace Instruments' AI-DDPG/DP1-1 differential pressure indicator is installed at the door of these rooms to provide both a local visual reading for clinical staff and a continuous BMS-linked signal for facilities and infection control teams under the IAQ Detectors monitoring standard.

Continuous Monitoring vs Periodic Verification

ASHRAE 170-2021 and most hospital accreditation frameworks, including NABH in India, expect isolation room pressure to be continuously monitored with a visible indicator and, where feasible, an alarmed BMS connection. A differential pressure indicator referencing the isolation room against the corridor gives an immediate, unambiguous reading of whether the pressure direction and magnitude are correct; a smoke tube test, by contrast, only confirms the condition at the moment of the test.

The AI-DDPG/DP1-1 is calibrated for the low differential ranges these applications require, with an output that can be logged continuously through 4-20mA or RS-485 Modbus RTU for the compliance record hospital accreditation surveys expect to review.

Field Note

During a NABH accreditation survey, a hospital's facilities team was able to produce three months of continuous differential pressure logs for every AII and PE room on request, including two documented excursions caused by HVAC maintenance work, each with a timestamped resolution. The surveyors noted the continuous logging as a positive finding rather than requiring a corrective action plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pressure differential does ASHRAE 170-2021 require for isolation rooms?

ASHRAE 170-2021 specifies a minimum pressure differential of 2.5 Pa, negative for airborne infection isolation rooms and positive for protective environment rooms, relative to the adjoining corridor.

What is the difference between airborne infection isolation and protective environment rooms?

Airborne infection isolation rooms are kept negative to contain pathogens and prevent them reaching the corridor, while protective environment rooms are kept positive to prevent corridor air reaching immunocompromised patients.

Is continuous pressure monitoring required for hospital isolation rooms?

ASHRAE 170-2021 and hospital accreditation frameworks such as NABH expect isolation room pressure to be continuously monitored and visually verifiable at the room entrance, not just checked periodically.

Why Trust IAQ Detectors
